About me - Alberto Durán Fotografía

I grew up surrounded by family photo albums, at a time when you had to choose carefully which moments were worth preserving on paper.

In 2006, a trip to Egypt inspired me to buy a simple Canon PowerShot A400. I still enjoy looking back at those photographs and reliving the adventure. That was when I first understood the value of memories and the power of photography to tell stories.

From the Perfect Photograph to Visual Storytelling

Over the years, I stopped chasing “the perfect photograph” and began focusing on something I find far more rewarding today: telling stories through images, sometimes accompanied by short texts.

Fitness and bodybuilding became particularly important worlds for me. Through them, I try to bring together technique, sensitivity and storytelling to reveal not only the physique, but also the people and the stories behind it.

I’m drawn to the timeless, and perhaps that is why I identify so strongly with black and white photography today. I like to strip away the distraction of colour and draw the eye towards what really matters: light, shadow and the meaning behind the image.

Projects

Between 2020 and 2026, I documented IFBB Pro League and NPC Worldwide bodybuilding competitions in Spain from a personal perspective, with the support of promoter Emilio Martínez.

With Anatomy of the Competition, I try to go beyond what happens on stage and tell the story of everything surrounding a bodybuilding show: the preparation, the waiting, the tension, the gestures and those small moments that so often go unnoticed.

I am also developing Iron Soul Heroes, a photographic and narrative essay focused on bodybuilders who use a wheelchair in their daily lives. Through images and words, I try to get closer to the person, the athlete and the hero behind each story, and to tell stories of determination and resilience that deserve to be known

Travel Changes You

Besides being a photographer, travel is part of who I am. I write and photograph as I travel because doing so helps me experience each journey more intensely. It demands that I stay present, observe more closely and preserve those moments with greater clarity.

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit places as diverse as New Zealand, Norway, Malaysia, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Japan, China, Finland, Sri Lanka, Borneo, Indonesia, Egypt, the United States, Iceland, Singapore, Taiwan, Canada, Vietnam, Korea, Morocco, the Netherlands and Germany.

In the end, for me, photography and travel go hand in hand. They are my way of preserving what I never want to forget, so I can return to those moments again and again.
