OSCAR GONZÁLEZ GIL
THE MAN
I’m Oscar González Gil, from Segovia (Spain), and I’m 46 years old.
THE ATHLETE
I’ve been involved in sports my whole life. I started going to the gym when I was about fifteen or sixteen, to prepare for the firefighter entrance exams. I got hooked on the gym and never stopped, although I’ve dabbled a bit in other disciplines too.
I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by weights in the gym. About five years ago, I decided to take things to the next level. My cousin, who’s also my coach, convinced me to make that step. So, I’ve been into bodybuilding for five years now, and a professional for two—up to this day.
THE HERO
I never saw sport as a way to overcome something, because I’ve been into it since I was a kid. But when I was 20, I had a work accident. I was working as a lumberjack, and I got injured on the job. At that time, I was still preparing for the firefighter exams.
What I did was use sport—something I already had a strong foundation in—as a tool to recover as best as I could and keep doing what I loved: training in the gym.
I’ve never stopped, and honestly, it’s been great for me. It really improves your quality of life, especially in a situation like mine. It can be a powerful motivational tool because it helps you in your everyday life. I believe it’s a great way to approach the rest of your life—by making training part of your daily routine and sticking with it.
